Epileptic Seizures, Public Knowledge, and Personal Seizure First Aid

Living with epilepsy, especially having frequent seizures, can cause a lot of anxiety around being independent in public. Knowing you may have a seizure and become unresponsive or lose awareness can make someone worried, particularly as many members of the public don’t know how to help someone seizing. In fact, the charity Epilepsy Action performed a survey of 2,000 people and found that only 54% of respondents felt they would know how to help if they encountered someone having a seizure.

Equally, seizures can present very differently for each person, and many individuals who frequently seize will have personalised seizure first aid plans with details on exactly how to help and what their normal symptoms are.

Enabling Better Epilepsy Support Through NFC

To ensure that those living with epilepsy can always receive tailored seizure first aid and personalised support in the event of seizing in public, the team at Lumiio has developed a new Epilepsy Collection. Enabled by the same technology that has seen individuals affected by dementia across the UK gain greater independence and peace of mind, our Epilepsy Collection is designed to break down information barriers that rise up to block critical seizure support.

Getting instant, tailored support for a seizure is crucial. A survey by Epilepsy Action found that 51% of individuals with epilepsy thought they would seriously hurt themselves while seizing if no one helped. Quickly recognizing a seizure and providing relevant first aid is essential to ensure those living with epilepsy remain safe in public spaces, knowing what to do could make all the difference. Read our blog on what you need to know about epilepsy to learn more about common epileptic seizure symptoms to recognise and how to provide standard seizure first aid.

That’s why Lumiio is making essential information about individual’s personal seizure details and first aid plans instantly and securely accessible. Inputting your name, essential seizure information, and two emergency contact details onto a Lumiio Epilepsy Collection product makes this information accessible through a simple tap & hold with any modern smartphone. This means that in the event of a seizure in public, bystanders and medical professionals can tap their phone to instantly retrieve your seizure information and personalised first aid plan- immediately giving you the crucial tailored support you need.

The Epilepsy Collection

The team at Lumiio focused on two critical points for the Epilepsy Collection, namely wearability and recognisability. Making sure these products seamlessly fit into everyday life whilst also ensuring they functioned as recognisable epilepsy IDs.

Our Design Choices

All of our Epilepsy Collection products are in a deep purple, which is the official epilepsy awareness colour and is associated with the celebrated Purple Day, an annual event held on March 26th to raise epilepsy recognition and funding. All three products in the collection are both discreet and easily identified as an epilepsy ID device, with smaller sizes and more streamlined designs than both the main Lumiio Collection and Dementia Collection.

The Mini Epilepsy Token Hangtag and Tapp Epilepsy Keyfob have epilepsy purple on one side and the classic Lumiio sunset gradient on the other, with the purple face sporting the call-to-action text “I have epilepsy, tap & hold your phone to help me”. This same text is written on the face of the new, slimmer design of the Epilepsy Wristband. We redesigned the Epilepsy Wristband in a sports band style, with a white dot gradient on top of the purple. This redesign reduces both the band and face size of the standard Lumiio Soft-Touch Wristband in wristwatch style, also changing the face shape from a circle to more rectangular.

The Soft-Touch Epilepsy Wristband

Suitable for adult wrists, this band can be adjusted with its pop-clip style close to suit sizes from around 14cm/5 inches up to 24cm/9 inches.

The Token Mini Epilepsy Hangtag

Measuring 30mm round, it's still large enough to be noticed but small enough to attach wherever you need.

The Tapp Epilepsy Keyfob

Measuring 56mm x 28mm and crafted with an enhanced 1.2mm thickness, the Tapp Epilepsy Keyfob is the perfect size and durability for long-lasting use. Pair it with the Lumiio Lanyard for an even more seamless experience.
