Devon & Cornwall Police have introduced a pilot in Cornwall to transform how emergency services interact with neurodiverse individuals.

At the core of the project are distinctive green 'Neurodiversity ID' (NDID) wristbands, supplied by our sister company Seritag. Designed to improve communication and safety for those wearing them when they need help.

The project uses the classic Dementia Safeguarding style wristbands and is designed to work in the same way.

A community-led development

This initiative is the result of close collaboration among Devon & Cornwall Police, The Autistic Community of Cornwall, the National Police Autism Association, and the National Youth Neurodiversity Council.

It aims to put 'the person at the centre,' tailoring support from the very first moment of contact.

Why this matters

Police officers acknowledge that intense or unfamiliar situations can be overwhelming for some individuals. The wristbands offer a simple way to alert responders about a person’s needs, reducing misunderstandings and fostering calm, more empathetic interactions.

The Lumiio project is fundamentally centered on unifying a wide range of initiatives focused on Essential Personal Information. As the number of these projects continues to grow, the Lumiio platform provides a reliable and universal solution that enables first responders to access critical information more efficiently across all participating programs.

Why green ?

There's a large number of wristbands already on the market to cover dementia and Alzheimers and these tend to be blue or yellow. The use of green was simply to differentiate and create it's own identity.

Generating interest

The project has raised awareness of the issues surrounding Neurodiversity and has been picked up by press both local and national - including this article on the BBC.
